Week 9: Day Camp + DEILAB! (Grades K-6)

For the week of August 19-23, 2019, Running Brook is excited to again partner with DEILAB, a creative and innovative program that is built around the application of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (S.T.E.A.M.). Through three different program modules, DEILAB focuses on "idea generation (ideation), iteration (prototyping), as tools for innovation using hands-on LEGO projects as an activating agent in the chain of events."

For each of the three program modules, the structure will be as follows:  All enrolled campers will engage in three hours of DEILAB programming each day, complemented by three hours of Running Brook Day Camp programming for the remainder of the day.  Lunch and snack will be provided as usual, as will time to be outdoors playing and enjoying some of our other great camp activities.  Each DEILAB program can have a maximum of 25 campers and will be staffed by two of their instructors, as well as at least one RBDC staff member.  For the remainder of the day, campers will be supervised by Running Brook staff.

Here are the program options:

For campers in grades K-3, we will be offering DEILAB’s exciting LEGO design engineering and innovation coursework based on mechanical, artistic, design and robotics projects. The laboratory environment is structured to enhance curiosity and ignite ingenuity. Labs are built around the application of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (S.T.E.A.M.). These skills are convergent and complementary where art and engineering blend to leverage the capacity of human intelligence, adaptability, and innovation. The non-linear learning environment emphasizes collaboration and creativity.

Campers in grades 4-6 will have two options, LEGO Robotics or Radio Controlled Racing Academy.  For the Robotics lab, campers design and fabricate working robotic systems, while learning how to program and control fully functioning robots using ether LEGO Mindstorm or VEX systems. Instructors provide an overview of robot mechanisms, dynamics, and controls. Campers learn engineering techniques, solve challenges and develop their own open-ended design projects. Camper design teams work together to brainstorm, test and improve their creations.  The RC Racing lab provides in-depth exposure to the science and excitement of racing. Campers build the cars from 1000’s of pieces into lightning-fast race cars. The building, engineering, innovation and racing experience scales daily with a mixture of instruction, building, testing and hands-on racing. Under the guidance of trained instructors, campers will learn through a curriculum that integrates complex building skills and strategies for innovation.

You can learn more about DEILAB and their programs from their website,  And you can check out some cool videos on their YouTube channel.

“DEILAB™ programs cultivate innovation for children and adults through project based learning with LEGO. The curriculum modules are classroom-tested, project based instructional sequences. DEILAB projects address STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) concepts through LEGO design and engineering activities.”
