Our Leadership Training Program (LTP) is a series of four-week training programs designed for 7th, 8th and 9th graders who enjoy working with younger children, are interested in learning more about themselves as leaders, and are open to a dynamic group experience! Over the course of two summers with us, our LTPs complete a progression of training and learning opportunities. We also have reinstated our Young Leaders program for those interested in and qualified for a session of additional leadership training!

How do I apply for the program?

Below are the steps for applying for the first summer in the program:
  1. Two-part application process: parent registers camper and camper completes a written application.
  2. Obtain three letters of recommendation.
  3. Submit written application and three letters of recommendation to the Camp Office. This submission can be completed via email (runningbrookcamp@chch.org) OR mail (785 Beaver Street, Waltham MA 02452). 
  4. Schedule a face-to-face interview if contacted by a Director of the Leadership Training Program
Please note that members of our Leadership Training Program must commit to four consecutive weeks of enrollment in order to be accepted. This policy is to ensure all LTPs receive consistent training and opportunities to show growth over the course of the summer. 

Sessions 1 & 2 run from June 26 - July 21, 2023
Sessions 3 & 4 run from July 24 - August 18, 2023

We will initially accept LTPs for one four-week session only in order to provide opportunities to as many participants as possible. We will revisit the waitlist prior to our Commitment Date (March 31st) to consider additional weeks of enrollment. 

So what do LTPs do at camp?

For half of the day, LTPs follow a structured schedule of various training opportunities, including classroom-based instruction from camp administrators and community service. They also get the chance to enjoy some fun together in some of our regular camp activities.

For the other half of the day, LTPs spend time with younger camp groups. LTPs are typically assigned to the same group for an entire two-week session. They may also be assigned as an assistant to a specific activity specialist if this is of interest to them and when deemed to be an appropriate fit by our LTP Director. 

For our Friday special events, LTPs are given the choice to assist in the activities with the younger campers or partake in the activities themselves!

At the end of their first summer in the program, each LTP will be given a formal written evaluation of their work by the LTP Director, which includes whether or not they are being recommended for a second year in the program. Those campers who are recommended should complete the application and will not need to have another face-to-face interview for the following summer.

LTPs receive direct and ongoing feedback and supervision from the group counselors (or specialist) with whom they are assigned, as well as from the LTP Director. A significant portion of the week for the LTPs is also spent debriefing and processing their experience working with the campers, engaging in team-building activities and self-reflection activities focused on leadership styles.

Although a large number of our current Junior Counselors were members of the Leadership Training Program at some time, participation does not guarantee a position working on staff at Running Brook. Rather, the primary goals of the program are to build self-awareness and self-confidence, to learn and enhance leadership skills within a camp environment and to have fun and grow through a dynamic group experience.
