Weeks 6-8

Hello Group 13 Families and Friends!

Week 8 is here and the summer is winding down, but we’re still having a great time at Running Brook Day Camp! In Week 6 we had an amazing Carnival Day with homemade popcorn, carnival games, and beautiful weather. We also dressed up as our personal heroes that week and although it was one of the hottest days of the summer, one member of our group dressed head to toe as the big bad wolf and two dressed in head to toe hero body suits! It was quite the sight! Week 7 featured Aqua Day and Under the Sea Dress-up Day, and we are very excited for Decade Day and Performance Day during week 8. During week 8 we are also celebrating Camp Director Jim Bellanca and Camp Manager Denise Gougan, both of whom are in their 20th year with the camp! We celebrated with “Talk like Denise Day” and “Goatee Tuesday,” over 100 thank you cards and signs around campus, and jokes and flowers being delivered to them!
Here are some things to ask your camper about from Weeks 6-8:
  • Drama: We worked on a lot of improv these weeks. What superhero did you imagine? What were your superpowers? When you played “Waiting for the Bus,” who were you? How did you convey your character? When we made hand puppets, what scene did you act out? Who was with you?
  • Swim: What have you learned in Instructional Swim this summer? Who else is in your swim lessons and who are your instructors? What games do you play during free swim?
  • Yoga: We tried some really tough poses. Can you remember the caterpillar? The eagle? Pigeon?
  • Self Defense: What is a superman punch? What about an offensive side blade kick? Do you feel like you have learned any life lessons in self-defense this summer?
  • Woodshop: What did you make during our free build? What are you going to store in your book safe? What did you like best about making a gumball machine?
  • Electives: What electives did you choose?
  • Creative Movement: We’ve been focusing on our performance for performance day on Friday. What ideas did you come up with? What instrument/player are you in the air band? What’s your 4-second dance move? Can you show the group 13 handshake?
  • Science: What is dry ice? Why doesn’t it ever melt into liquid? What are some cool experiments to do with dry ice?
  • High Ropes: What goal did you set for high ropes? Did you reach your goal? Were you able to strike a pose while zip-lining?
  • Sports: What is mat ball? What about Team Crackerball?
  • Cooperative Games: We played some great water games including Plug the Pipe and Ice Monster. Did you come up with any good strategies? How did you work with others?
  • Legos: What did you build? Who are you working with? Did you get to see the light-up Legos, or the robotics?
  • Special Event: How was the puppet show? Did you like the retelling of Cinderella? Tell about the white hand puppet and the big orange arm puppet.
We’ve had such a busy summer, but also a very successful one in Group 13. Our campers have been having a great time making new friends, connecting with old friends, and participating in so many diverse and challenging activities. The campers have really brought their energy and enthusiasm each day to camp and to group 13 especially! I hope to see you on Performance Day so you can see just how creative, energetic, and silly our group can be!
